Mott
Corporation Offers Steam
Sparging and Filtration Guide
to Design Engineers
FARMINGTON,
CT, [April 2004] – Mott
Corporation has compiled a document
which contains everything you
wanted to know about designing,
sizing and applying porous metal
in steam sparging applications.
Sparging
is the direct injection of steam
into a process, so it is also
important to filter the steam. If it is not filtered
prior to the sparger element, the
element will act as a filter, which
will cause plugging. Steam
filtration removes rust, pipe scale,
and other crud picked up in the
steam distribution system. These
materials can damage process equipment
and the final product of a process
downstream. Examples of sparging
that require steam filtration include
bottling/packaging/canning processes,
hot water preparation for domestic/industrial
consumption, sanitary food/beverage/pharmaceutical
processes, and heating liquids
(such as soup).
To
accommodate the avid Design Engineer,
this document describes steam
sparging and the integration
of porous metal by defining the
materials, the media, and the
process. Steps to
lead you through variations in
design including static, dynamic,
non-intrusive and intrusive spargers,
as well as how to size the sparger
you need for your application are
all incorporated in this guide.
Rigid
construction and high temperature
capability of Mott porous metal
materials are properties ideally
suited to handle steam sparging
and filtration at all temperature
and pressure conditions. Mott’s
porous metal can control the pressure
drop along an element reducing
the chance of steam hammer and
distributing the steam along the
entire length of the element ensuring
maximum surface area contact.
