Beverage Manufacturer Expands Marketshare
And Increases Revenue Through Mott Solution

FARMINGTON , CT [March, 2004] – When a major regional beverage manufacturer had to solve a problem of extending the shelf life of their products, they came to Mott for a solution. High oxygen levels in their filling process caused shorter shelf life and reduced their product's quality as it was stocked for distribution. Not only was their local business affected, but they found it difficult to expand into other regions.

Mott solved the problem by analyzing their process information and introducing their GasSaver® sparger to the filling line which resulted in reducing the oxygen levels from 10-18 ppm (parts per million) to 2-3 ppm. A study conducted during the testing revealed that controlling the total dissolved oxygen in the final product reduced spoilage and increased the shelf life of packaged product from weeks to months. Not only was their product quality increased, but the company was able to expand distribution to other geographical areas that resulted in increased product sales and revenue.

The key to solving the problem was listening to the customer and gaining a clear understanding of the technical and commercial issues at hand. The solution involved attaining more efficient gas-liquid mixing. And successful gas-liquid mixing depends on fine bubbles providing higher total surface area for a given volume of gas. Devices using large gas bubbles provide low total surface area resulting in slow, incomplete and inefficient costly reactions. Mott GasSavers employ porous metal providing highly consistent porosity to the process. Tiny micron-sized bubbles allow high surface area and fast, efficient mass transfer allowing for reduced gas consumption and saving dollars

Mott manufactures the highest quality porous metal products designed to meet specific filtration, flow control, and separation applications. Since 1959, Mott has been providing engineered solutions with its products in industries such as food and beverage, aerospace, chemical, petrochemical and refinery, biomedical, pharmaceutical, analytical instrumentation, and semiconductor. Applications for this unique, renewable media include filtration, flow control, gas/liquid contacting, sensor protection, gas sampling, catalyst recovery, slurry oil filtration, and many others. Standard material used in Mott's manufacturing process is 316L stainless steel, although others like Nickel, Inconel®, Hastelloy®, Monel®, and Titanium are used depending upon the application environment's corrosive nature and extreme temperature requirements.
